We welcome Dr Praveen De Silva to the Waitemata Surgeons team. As the Clinical Lead for Laparoscopic Surgery and Endometriosis at Te Whatu Ora Waitemata (North Shore Hospital), Dr De Silva specialises in advanced endometriosis surgery (AGES Level 6) and has a keen interest in minimally invasive hysterectomy and fibroid removal.
After completing his medical training across New Zealand, he undertook a prestigious two-year fellowship at the Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre, earning the sought-after AGES qualification. His research on postoperative pain management has been recognised internationally.
Dr De Silva’s formative years were spent growing up in Wellington, and his medical and specialist training has taken him all around New Zealand. In 2019, he had the privilege of joining the world-leading team at Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre (SWEC) to complete a 24-month fellowship and obtain the AGES qualification. One of his recent professional highlights was conducting a randomised clinical trial using pelvic nerve blocks to reduce post-operative pain for women, for which he won the best presentation at the 2021 AGES annual scientific meeting.
Now back in New Zealand with his young family, Dr De Silva is committed to delivering expert care to women with complex gynaecological conditions. In his spare time, you will generally find him chasing behind a bicycle or scooter or trying to convince a toddler of the value of sleep.
