Colorectal and General Surgeon and Endoscopist

Mike Hulme-Moir is the Clinical Lead for both the Colorectal Unit at North Shore Hospital and Oncology Services at Waitemata. He has been practising in General Surgery since 1998 and Colorectal Surgery since 2001, and is also a member of the Melanoma Unit.
With expertise in a wide range of colorectal diseases, Mike provides advanced colonoscopic procedures including complex polyps and cancer stenting. He offers laparoscopic surgery where possible to minimise patient discomfort.

Mike also specialises in advanced pelvic malignancy and endoscopic techniques, as well as laparoscopic surgery for other abdominal conditions such as gallstones, hernias and appendicitis.

Mike completed his medical degree at Auckland Medical School following a BSc at Massey University. His surgical training across New Zealand included roles at Taranaki Base, Tauranga, and Auckland hospitals. After earning his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1998, he undertook a Fellowship in Colorectal and Upper GI Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Mike spearheaded the Bowel Screening Pilot, which has evolved into the National Bowel Screening Programme. He became the inaugural Clinical Director of Bowel Screening during the programme's rollout at Waitemata DHB, and founded the Waitemata Colorectal Unit, now a six-surgeon team treating all colorectal diseases. As one of three accredited CSSANZ training sites in New Zealand, the unit has contributed to key colorectal research, including major Australasian laparoscopic cancer trials and has published several papers on procedures such as splenic flexure lymphatic drainage and postoperative hernia pain relief.

Mike also developed a tertiary referral practice at North Shore Hospital and created the North Island Pelvic Exenteration Service at North Shore Hospital.

Known for his compassionate approach, Mike listens actively to his patients and strives to treat the whole person, rather than only their condition. He is an active listener and endeavours to provide the best treatment options and up-to-date advice. He also encourages the inclusion of family when and where needed. Mike’s team of experienced nursing and physio staff take pride in supporting both patients and one another.
Outside of clinic hours, Mike is a keen cyclist, tramper, fisherman, gardener, and beekeeper.
