Dr. Shahed Yassaie

General and Colorectal Surgeon

Dr. Shahed Yassaie is a highly skilled New Zealand-trained General Surgeon with subspecialty expertise in Colorectal Surgery. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and subsequently completed advanced post-fellowship training with the prestigious ANZTBCRS, managing both benign and malignant colorectal conditions through minimally invasive techniques.

Dr. Yassaie grew up in Wellington, completed university in Otago and has gained extensive experience across major hospitals in New Zealand and Australia. In 2021, he served as the Colorectal Fellow at Middlemore Hospital while simultaneously completing a Master's in Biomedical Sciences at Auckland University. He further honed his surgical skills during fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, focusing on complex colorectal procedures and robotic surgery.

In his current practice, Dr. Yassaie offers comprehensive care for colorectal conditions, including keyhole colorectal resections for benign and malignant diseases. He has a high-volume practice in proctology (haemorrhoids, fistulae, fissures, prolapse), as well as managing conditions such as pilonidal sinus disease, pelvic floor disorders, and performing colonoscopy. Additionally, he performs minimally invasive robotic surgery for incisional hernia at Tōtara Haumaru and provides expert care for all abdominal wall and groin hernia, as well as benign gallbladder disease. As part of the team at North Shore Hospital, he contributes to the management of advanced pelvic malignancies.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Yassaie is committed to mentoring junior staff and fostering a supportive, collaborative environment within the healthcare team. His approachable demeanour and dedication to patient-centred care align with the values of Waitemata Surgeons, where he is a valued team member. He also holds a public appointment at North Shore Hospital as a Colorectal and General Surgeon.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Yassaie enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and pursuing outdoor activities such as fishing, mountain biking, and golf.
