Originally from the North Shore of Auckland, Dr Turnbull graduated from Auckland Medical School in 2002. Dr Turnbull has worked in all the major public hospitals in Auckland in various medical and surgical roles including subspecialty positions in pharmacology, cardiology and rheumatology amongst others. This training developed his interest in hospital and academic medicine.
His dermatology training was undertaken in Auckland and completed in London. He then studied for his Fellowship in Dermatopathology in Warwick, England.
Dermatopathology involves reviewing and interpreting skin biopsies and correlating with the patient’s clinical presentation. In 2014 he achieved accreditation in dermatopathology with the International Society of Dermatopathology and European Union of Medical Specialists.
He an active interest and involvement in clinical trials. Regularly presents at regional, national and international meetings. He has been published in international journals. Contributes to educational dermatology websites including dermnet and pathology outlines. He regularly reviews articles for medical journals. In 2017 the University of Auckland accredited him title of Horary senior lecturer. In 2024 he was awarded the title of Distinguished Clinical Teacher by the University of Auckland.
He has specific interests in medical dermatology, skin cancer surgery, male genital dermatology, and clinical research.
